Reforms can work

Today has had two firsts for Southern Grampians Shire Council.

We had the first meeting of the Planning Committee to consider a planning permit application. And we councillors met before midday on a Wednesday!  The Planning Committee meeting was advertised and open to interested members of the public and met at 10.00 am Wednesday morning in the Ted Kenna room. The issues and the outcomes will be for others to report, but I am just so pleased that we were able to reform our processes and have a more progressive manner of addressing important planning issues.

All councillors are members of the Planning Committee. We had to have a quorum of four councillors to progress with the meeting. There were three items on the agenda and we met in the morning of a day when there is a regular Ordinary Council Meeting at 5.30 pm.  Whilst timing of meetings will be the responsibility of a new council, it was just great to have such a productive process where we could hear directly from the applicants and work together on solutions for what can often be complex issues of planning.  It is good to see a reform I have suggested and supported, along with other councillors, working for our Shire.

Yours sincerely,
